Privilege, Education, and Opportunity: Does Elite Schooling Guarantee Success?

The connection among education, privilege and professional achievement has been discussed in the UK for over 40 years. One of those prominent figures involved in this discussion is former British prime minister David Cameron, whose education path was also very privileged. In order to attend some of Britain’s top independent schools, Cameron went to Eton College. Additionally, he studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE), at Brasenose College, Oxford. Historically, his type of schooling has provided the pathway to many of the senior politicians, judges, and business leaders of the UK (UK Government, n.d.)

However, discussions about privilege should be based on evidence rather than assumptions; there is no credible public evidence supporting the claim that David Cameron’s son is “inadequate” or unable to secure a job. Although there are no credible reports to support this claim, it is irresponsible to use speculation about an individual who has never sought out the spotlight to present them as factual. Fairness, accuracy and respect for privacy are all important in responsible journalism especially when referencing an individual’s family member(s).

Advantage: Elite schools may offer students excellent academic programs, specialized faculty, and supportive networks to enhance university and competitive job opportunities.

Disadvantage: Some critics also believe that the influence of a family and social network can provide advantages to students from high-achieving or high-income backgrounds and cannot always distinguish between personal success and inherited privilege. This has led to continuing debates about fairness and equal opportunity in British society.

A more meaningful question is whether attending an elite private school or university guarantees professional success. Research indicates that elite educational institutions can offer students with great advantage which includes outstanding teachers, a robust network of alumni contacts and entry into powerful social and professional networks. These opportunities could enable students to enter their first jobs with advantages. However, education is just one factor which determines long term success. Many employers place increasing importance on practical skills and work experience as well as adaptability, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

David Cameron has demonstrated through his own career path that while education can lead to advancement, it is merely one element of a person’s career. Prior to being appointed as Prime Minister in 2010, Mr. Cameron had work experience with the Conservative Research Department and was employed as a Special Adviser to Government. In addition, he developed skills in the Private Sector; this combination of educational attainment and real-world experiences ultimately led to his progression through Politics. The process of progressing through Politics typically involves many years of public service, political campaigns and leadership roles in addition to a graduate degree. (UK Government, n.d.)

Advantage: Quality education combined with a solid work-based experience can provide people with the knowledge and leadership competencies they need for challenging careers in politics, business and public service.

Disadvantage: Others say that opportunities to internships, jobs and influential circles are available to the children of well-known politicians and businesspeople because of their family backgrounds. While family connections can be a factor in securing a career, it should be primarily based on ability and performance and not on family status.

However, Critics believe that due to Britain’s Education System still favoring students graduating from Elite Schools and Universities, there is growing concern regarding the availability of Equal Opportunities and Social Mobility. Those supporting the argument that students attending Elite Institutions are receiving High Quality Education and are fostering Academic Excellence, thus developing the students into the best possible candidates for highly competitive Careers. Therefore, both arguments are contributing to a National Discussion regarding Fairness and Access to Opportunity.

Advantage: Policies that expand access to quality education and employment opportunities can improve social mobility and allow talented individuals from all backgrounds to succeed.

Disadvantage: If leadership opportunities seem to be going to people from the privileged classes or those with strong family connections, there may be a loss of faith in selection based on merit.

While Educational Background certainly plays a part in Career Success, Determination, Work Experience, Talent, Economic Conditions and Available Opportunities also play significant parts in determining an individual’s Career Outcomes. With Elite Education possibly opening Doors to additional Opportunities, maintaining a Successful Career requires consistently performing at a high level and adapting to changes in your field. Therefore, discussions surrounding Privilege and Leadership should be based upon Facts rather than baseless Personal Criticism. Discussing Systems and Institutions provides a more Constructive Public Debate than Unsubstantiated Claims made against Private Individuals. A factually based discussion fosters Informative Opinions and allows for Meaningful Reflection on How Education and Opportunity Shape Modern Society.
